Bookshop.org Book Haul

Hello friends,
I ended up taking another full week off writing due to health reasons {like there’s any other reason!} but I’m back today with my first book haul of 2021!
Before we get into the books, I want to tell you little bit about the website that I purchased them from because it wasn’t Waterstones! I know, I’m as shocked as you are! But having heard about BookShop, I wanted to give them try because I love what they’re doing business wise. As you know, 2020 wasn’t the best year and many small businesses have really suffered due to lack of footfall and many business owners have had to scramble to get their stock online in order to try to keep their business going during this hard time. Towards the end of last year, I heard that my favourite Waterstones bookshop in my local city had closed down. while I can buy from them online and they are a pretty big book selling company, knowing that physical shop isn’t there anymore makes me so sad.
This is where BookShop comes in. They are a website that not only sells books but helps to support authors and independent book shops all over the U.K and the U.S. A percentage of each order made on their website goes directly to the book shops they work with, or if you choose a specific book shop, then they will receive the full profit amount from your order.
Book Shops, large or small, are such magical places and they need all the help they can get during these times when people simply cannot set foot into the shops. So buying from BookShop is a great way to help and I felt so proud knowing that I’d helped out a local shop with my order. {My dedicated bookshop is actually in a neighbouring town as the only local small bookshop in my town isn’t on the site and they specialise in second books only.} Their website is really straight forward to use and delivery was actually really quick despite all the postage delays at the moment. Overall, I was really impress! In fact, I was so impressed with the ethos of this company and what they’re doing, that I decided to sign up for their affiliate program and I have set up my own BookShop page with lists of books either on my TBR or my Wishlist.
Okay, now lets into the reason you wanted to read this article… the Books!
This haul is a bit of a mix of special editions I wanted to add to my collection plus some books I really want to read.
Persuasion by Jane Austen {Seasons Edition ~ Summer, published by Thomas Nelson}
I love these Seasons Editions so much but I’m having to be strict with myself and only buying the ones of books that I truly love or want to read. My favourite Classic author is Jane Austen and I read Persuasion earlier this month and just fell in love with the story. So when I saw that Thomas Nelson had a Seasons Edition of the book, I knew I had to add it to my collection.
The Wonderland Collection by Lewis Carroll {Seasons Edition ~ Summer, published by Thomas Nelson}
I have Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on my reading list for this year and again, when I saw that there was a Summer edition of Lewis Carrol’s Wonderland collection, well I just had to have Alice on my shelf! It’s just so beautiful and is a lovely addition to my slowly growing Children’s Classics collection.
The RSC Shakespeare: The Complete Works by Jonathan Bates and Eric Rasmussen
This is really another “collectors edition” that I’ve had on my Wishlist for the longest time. I love a number of Shakespeare’s works and they were my favourite pieces of literature to study in school for my English GCSE’s, but I’ve not read every single thing the great Bard wrote. However, this year, with the purchase of this very large and very very heavy tome, I’m hoping to change that!
This is one very chunky, long book! It’s over 800 pages, so just something to beat in mind if you think about picking this one up.
It’s classed as a Modern and contemporary fiction, post c 1945. The book follows a teenage boy named Theo Decker, who ends up separated from his mother and living in New York ~ the only reminder of his mother, is a small, captivating painting. It’s this painting that leads Theo into the criminal underworld as he grows into an adult.
This books seems like it’s full of mystery and loss and love and surviving tragedy and I’m totally here for all of that! I just need to pick a month and make it a priority with it being so long!
While there are many versions / retellings / and supplementary books of Jane Austen’s works, I don’t often pick them up because I love the originals so much. However, when I came across this book and read that it was all about Mary Bennett, I was very intrigued! You see, although I love Pride and Prejudice, I always felt Mary was a little hard done to. She was the bookish middle child and seemed to be left to go unmarried and alone in comparison to the other Bennett sisters.
From the reviews I’ve read, it seems Janice Hadlow has stayed true as can be to Austen’s writing style and overall, this book has had a lot of positive feedback. So I wanted to give it go myself. It’s another chunky one with over 600 pages but I love a good long book that gives you plenty to get stuck into too!
So there we go, those are all the books in my first book purchase of this year and my first order of many using BookShop and supporting a local independent Book seller. The site is definitely worth checking out, fi you’re looking for ways to support small businesses this year.
Stay Safe. Happy Reading!
